Paris is the city of light. But I’ll be honest: Paris isn’t at the top of my favorite cities list. Last week though, I was in Paris for four days, and one evening as our group walked through the Tuileries, the sun began to set behind the Eiffel Tower.
In the few minutes we got to pause and take pictures, the light changed so much. It was incredibly beautiful.
Paris is a beautiful city. Sometimes the metro and the high prices make me forget what I love about Paris.
The art in the Louvre. I especially love the Winged Victory of Samothrac, this giant statue of an angel, and the ancient Greek and Roman exhibits.

The grandeur of the reigns of the monarchy and Napoleon juxtaposed with the harsh and terrifying reality of the revolutions and the Reign of Terror.
We visited the palace of Versailles. In the lavish bedroom of the queen, there is a small door camouflaged by wallpaper. It was through this door Marie-Antoinette fled during the raid on the palace.

We also saw the prison where Marie-Antoinette and other political prisoners were kept before their executions. It gave me chills. The museum even had an actual guillotine blade from the time.
It was a crazy few days. We saw so much -- and walked so much too! And the week wasn’t over. The day after we arrived back in Brussels, my roommate Ellen and I left for Italy. The three cities we there -- Rome, Florence and Venice -- will get their own post(s) later in the week so stay tuned.
